Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a technology that lets you make phone calls over an internet connection instead of a traditional copper phone line. A note on 911
Because a VoIP phone can be used from anywhere, emergency services cannot automatically know your location the way they can with a fixed landline. The Federal Communications Commission requires interconnected VoIP providers to offer Enhanced 911 (E911) service, but you typically must register and keep your physical address current. Always confirm how 911 works with your provider before relying on VoIP for emergencies.
For most organizations, VoIP delivers meaningful flexibility and cost advantages. The key is understanding that you are now running your phone system over a data network, which changes how you plan for reliability and security.
